The Sphinx Empty The Sphinx

I've seen Hellenic organizations have statues of the Greek Sphinx. Why is that? What does it represent to relevant ancient Greek religion? The only time I have heard of the Sphinx is in the story of Oedipus, and she was a vile creature.
