I hate it when forums go down because the site owner never gave a shit.

That is all.

I'm kinda sorry for posting that...but it was sort of a cruddy way for Hellenismos.us to go out. I expected more from a practitioner of Hellenismos. Then again - the owner can do whatever he wants with it - including shutting it down without warning.

And now I'm done.

It was very disapointing, and I nearly panicked a little till I remembered I had this half done. I hope that this becomes just as enjoyable, and I suspect it will.

I don't think the old site was 'shut down' at least not by a person. What I imagined happened was that he stopped paying for the web hosting and the hosting people shut it down – which would explain why other parts of the site had been going down earlier.

I second Ερωδιός' opinion. My guess is also that Timothy simple stopped paying for it, and the people who hosted the site took it down because of that.

I dunno...the site still exists, we can just no longer see it.

Right, it's there not deleted. Similar to taking a site off-line during maintenance.

And the domain is registered until 2016.

I do know that he is involved in local politics in his area, and it's gotten a little ugly. He may have his reasons for not wanting the site visible, or his connection to it made by anyone wanting to use it against him.

Of course, all one would have to do is Google his name and find all his books on Amazon, but you know....

Regardless of what may or may not have/what will happen to Hellenismos.us, this is here for us now I just hope that more can find it, there are still a few regulars missing

Yes taking the site offline won't mask much of his connection/activity if that's the reason. Btw, I saw that the url now redirects to his Hellenismos Facebook page.

It's just a shame that courtesy and consideration wasn't extended to the people who contributed to the longevity and value of that board. Falls very short of Reciprocity & Hospitality, y'know? Not a rant, just saying.

But yes, it is the past and we start anew.

So, I sent Timothy a question about linking from his old forum to this place, and he has agreed to do so, and indeed it works, Hellenismos.us now redirects people to this forum. He did read a few threads off course, and read our comments upon his absence and the forum going down. He has requested me to post the following in response:

"I read through a few of the threads on the board, and I am willing to clear up some rumors. I would be grateful if you could send my comments.
On one hand, I can concede people should have been given fair warning. On the other, I have been absent from both the board and "the community" for more than a year. My reasons for walking away are my own, but it was only a matter of time before the site went as well.

I have not been cleaning up or deleting my association with Hellenismos. The only thing gone is the site. The hosting and the domain name are/were separate bills. The hosting came due, and I chose not to renew it. It is that simple.

My association with Hellenismos will not affect my running for political office... a volunteer, unpaid position. The reason those comments were deleted from the site mention is the person who runs it felt religion was irrelevant. He would have deleted the comments if I were a Muslim, Jew, Scientology, or any other religion.

The one and only reason my religion was brought into the discussion was an attempt to take the discussion away from the budget issues. People have asked in person, and I have stated out right who I am. I neither hide from my spiritual opinions, nor do I stand on a soapbox forcing them on people of other religions. Fact is, most people have told me they don't care, and that is really how it should be.

I do apologize for any hurt feelings. It is what it is."

So hereby I have delivered the message.

I agree, this is a fresh start.

Well I wish Tim good luck with whatever direction he choses from further on. Perhaps it's question of time as too behind his decision, moderating a forum can take a lot of time. Been there, done that, bought the T-skirt, and it ate a lot of my spare time with all the spammers, drama queens, threads running out of line and just the general maintainence.

And I'm more than happy to start anew here. It's a bit like moving house, away with old clutter and new, freshly painted rooms to fill with the rest of your life.

We're new. The spam bots will find us sooner or later. Then the fun will start.

Battling spam-bots can be pretty fun....pretend they're cylons, and you have to eliminate them to save humanity....

That's why the URL is different. Huh.
