April Festival of Artemis Empty April Festival of Artemis

Post  AgathonZante Thu Apr 10, 2014 4:29 pm

As we know, on the Athenian Calendar, the Spring Festival of Artemis is coming up on the 16th, called Munichia.

Can someone educate me on how this festival was celebrated and what significance it bares to Artemis?

Thanks,
Agathon.

There is almost no record of the actual character or content of the Munichia — other than that it was likely associated with Ἄρτεμις, and gave its name to the month in which it fell. It was certainly an exclusively localized observance — endemic to the Piraeus.

The name seems to have been derived from the fact that the festival was centered around a particular shrine of the deity in the Munychia, an area of the Piraeus (the harbor village governed by Athens as its 'port').

It seems to have fallen out of practice sometime during the Hellenistic era.
