My path to Hellenismos
I was raised in a Catholic family and attended Sunday school for most of my childhood, but I was always turned off by their dogmatism and obsession with sin. Around age 12, I became an atheist, and I came out to my family as such when I was 14. I spent my teen years as a rabid anti-theist, but a couple of years ago (around age 22) I began becoming more and more disillusioned with the movement. Ultimately I found that the "New Atheist" movement relies on the same dualistic thinking and generalizations I hated about mainstream religion.
I began researching the different religions of the world and meditating on the subject. I had a passing familiarity with neo-paganism and Wicca, and at first they appealed to me. What little girl doesn't want grow up to be a witch, right? As I looked more into it, however, I was turned off by their reliance on unfounded historical claims and rampant heterosexism.
I've always been interested in Greek mythology ever since I was a child. One thing I've always appreciated is the lack of hierarchy and dogma in Greek religion. Each city has their own special gods, and even among the Twelve, which were most emphasized varied from city to city and even household to household.
When I was younger, I always looked up to Athene, but now I find myself strongly drawn to Aphrodite and have been focusing my study on her myths and what anthropological information I can find about her worship in ancient times. This is all still pretty new to me and more than a little overwhelming. This journey has been a very humbling experience for me, and I feel that I've barely started.
I hope to find people her that can help me on my path and that I may help others on theirs.
