Olympia, Greece
Hello!
Have been visiting Greece and Italy for a bit more than two weeks, a nice holiday break. And one of the days we did a tour to Olympia, the site of the ancient games. An amazing experience. The dig there is ongoing and they have unearthed rests of various buildings including the temples of Zeus and Hera, storage rooms, eateries and housing and the arena where the runners compeated. We also visited the Olympia museum with a lot of the art works found, including the rests of what used to adorn the temple of Zeus, and various statues and other findings. Including the amazing Hermes by Praxiteles (see below). Unfortunately, as we all know, the great golden statue of Zeus is gone - which was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. (Then again they found that golden Buddha in China which all believed was lost forever, so who knows....)
We recieved a lot of info about the ancient Olympic games, how they were believed to have been founded by Hercules for instance, how the winners got more or less a demigod status and what they used for doping back then (extracts of horse urin - no, I'm not kidding you )
However what was among the most amazing things - when threading that ground I got the certain feelings in places that it was still energized with the power of the memory of the celebrations.

Just a silly question?
Have you been at Olympia when the olympic games started when the fire gets traditionally lifted from olympia by women?
