Restoring A Statue of Artemis Empty Restoring A Statue of Artemis

So I bought this very nice bust of Artemis at an antique store for my outside shrine. I decided one day to wash it off without realizing how fragile the paint was. Apparently, the bust is very old, and the paint came off. The statue is damaged but not destroyed. I have decided to use my restoring talents to repair it, but I also want to give the piece color. Which colors should I use for Artemis? Such as hair color, eye and skin color and robe color?

Agathon.

Such as hair color, eye and skin color and robe color?

Statues seem to have had her hair painted in shades of brown. As a female figure, skin would have been generally painted a pale ivory color. Eyes of statues were typically painted white with all black pupils without irises.

When the colors of her clothing are mentioned, it is usually said to be purple – which would not, however, have meant quite the same color we think of as purple today. Graeco-Roman purple was kind of a purplish-red, very much like the color of, say, Syrah wine. Much redder than we usually think of as purple.

This is an image of a traditionally painted statue of her, made by traditional methods in Greece. It shows a pretty typical color scheme for Ἄρτεμις.

Where can one get such a statue? The only ones I can find are monochrome: I've always envied the Hindus their vast array of available murtis.

I'm not aware of any place that sells such images commercially. They're done mostly on commission by sculpture and metal casting studios – usually on a small-scale or individual basis, and, somewhat unfortunately, usually at a fairly long wait time and high expense.

Just as a measuring rod, I once commissioned a plaque, about the size of a dinnerplate. Although I was, ultimately, quite pleased with the finished product, I had to wait nearly four months for it to arrive.

ancientsculpturegallery.com is a place that sells high-quality reproduction and replica ancient and classical sculpture and art from all over the world. They also will work commissions.

However, I would also recommend checking eBay, especially searching under the 'Antiques' category to find unique and good-quality items.

Thanks for the reply, but their products are much too large and expensive — and still monochrome. souvenirsfromgreece.com do a good range of items of a suitable size at a fraction of the price: e.g. a 7½ inch Athena at €9 instead of a 43 inch one at $200!

That's quite what I meant to get at – for a painted image, one will probably have to pay commission to a studio, which can easily run into the several hundreds of dollars even for a relatively small piece.
