Just saying hello

Post  Claudiarya on Mon Jan 06, 2014 3:50 pm

hello,

i am not the best at introducing myself. I followed an advice on facebook to this forum, where i could discuss maybe even more about the greek gods.
Some know me from there maybe.
I am from Germany and follow the belief for many years now, but did not practice the traditional worship in the past for most of the time. But i did read what i did get and since i found out that the community grows and with it its books the must read list is also growing again.
Nice :-)

Besides, i also have a buddhist world view, so if i ever take part in philosophical discussions (what i doubt in general i have to admit), please dont find it disturbing when my arguments are fueled by that background.

greetings :-)
Claudia

Welcome — I hope you find your time here productive.

Buddhism is a classical religio-philosophical lineage, and was known in the Hellenistic world in Antiquity. Buddhist missionaries were sent to the west under Indian emperor Ashoka, and there is evidence that there were formal Buddhist communities in northern Egypt/Cyrenaica in the Imperial era, and probably others of which no evidence survived. Nobody ought to find Buddhist philosophy disturbing or irrelevant.

Thank you

Thats nice :-).
Historical roots like these are so somplicated. I know of theories that Mahayana evolved out of the greco-buddhits period, but i am not THAT much informed i would know about all these or other philosophies. just hints here and there...

Maybe one day i have more time for this. I am more the fan of mythology :-)

I'm a Classicist historian/linguist and world religion scholar in the real world — the development and evolution of ancient and Classical languages and cultures are my specialty and earthly love (not to mention what I do all day from August through April).

I am more the fan of mythology

More often than not, the two go hand-in-hand.  Wink

Welcome! ^^ no worries about disturbing us with Buddhist philosophy in these forums. Most of the people on here have at least a passing acquaintance with it, and those who are members of Mysterial traditions probably have more in common with the philosophies than they differ on Wink my teacher, for one, was a Buddhist for many years prior, in fact.

As was I. Though I know he and I were of different (though both Vajrayana) denominations.

He was a Nyingmapa, while I grew up with the Gelugpa lineage.
