An altar is really a sort of specially-purposed fire container.

If you're doing this outdoors on a forested area, I would first make sure that you are allowed to do so, and then take the same sort of precautions you would for building a campfire, the only difference being that an altar is a raised platform, rather than level with the ground.

Turns out there was an already perfect rock jutting out of the summit of the hill. I trekked my way to the top, admiring the beauty and there it was, jutting out and standing tall in the sun while an eagle circled it from no more than ten feet above! I was completely moved by the experience and made a prayer and offering of what I had on hand, some simple water.

What matters in offering is a right-minded spirit of selfless devotion, not the monetary cost of the offering.

With the right mind, there is no difference between the merit of a libation of pure water, versus that of the finest wine or sweetest honey. Wink
