Apollon and Herakles?
What are the theological connections between Apollon and Herakles?
I don't often remember my dreams, and when I -do remember dreams about the gods, I try to see if there are any significant things to be gleaned from the dream. I had such a dream last night. I cannot remember much of the dream, but the parts of the dream I do remember hint at some connection between Apollon and Herakles and the two gods working closely together to achieve some end, and the dream expressed this through a -lot- of solar imagery and symbolism.
I am unaware of any connections these two gods have with one another, and this dream makes me want to look into that. Are there any theological and/or mythological connections between these two deities?

Re: Apollon and Herakles?
In the Orphic Hymns, Heracles is called Paean (O.H. 12:10), which is a title of Apollon.
In Orphism, Heracles is considered to be a kouros — a higher deity who chose to descend to the plane of earth in order to aid mortals. As such, it may be said that, at least in Orphic theology, Heracles is an incarnation of the Paean, the apotropaic god, who is nearly always identified as a form of Apollon.
All the Gods are closely interconnected.

Re: Apollon and Herakles?
I have a considerable amount of interest in the Orphic cosmology and the Orphic tradition in general. Having a dream that hints at an Orphic belief I was previously unaware of is interesting, to say the least.
So, if I am understanding this correctly, Herakles is an emanation of and is contained within Apollo, like Asklepios is?
If I misunderstood that, please correct me.

Re: Apollon and Herakles?
Essentially.
Asclepius was an incarnation of Apollo's healing powers, Heracles was an incarnation of Apollo's apotropaic powers.

Okay. Good to know. Thank you very kindly, for explaining that to me ^^ I believe I shall look into Orphic theology much more deeply now.

Re: Apollon and Herakles?
There is the story of Herakles and Apollon and the Delphic Tripod, in which Herakles approached the Priestess of Delphi for an Oracle on how to cure him of a terrible disease and when one was not forthcoming he tried to take the Tripod and establish his own oracle. Apollon was not about to let his sacred tripod be stolen so he and Herakles wrestled over it aided in turn by Artemis for Apollon and Athena for Herakles. It was only stopped when their father Zeus hurled a thunderbolt between the two combatants.
